Tbh, Zanheer wasn’t entirely wrong about (most of) the white lotus being “glorified body guards” because they were really not on par to the red lotus during Korra’s time in terms of bending and in terms of deeper understanding of the nations. (Yes, the red lotus was twisted in their philosophies, but you have to give them credit for being almost as potent the original cast of white lotus members during the 100 year war).

If the White Lotus was established after Avatar Kuruk passing, then I believe that Gyatso would have been a member of the White Lotus. He had the White Lotus Pai Sho chip in Aang's flashback from "The Storm" episode. This actually came across my mind. If Gyatso saw Aang before Aang ran away, would Gyatso go with Aang?

I think, we’re wrong about the Red Lotus. The white lotus mentions their purpose was to sustain the four nations. But they changed their path and began to protect the avatar in order so he/she can fix problems. The Red lotus saw this transition and they also noticed that the white lotus nor the avatar were not concerned with the growth of civilisation. The white lotus didn’t care about oppressive regimes since the avatar himself couldn’t do anything or was in support of them. So, the Red lotus also expanded their vision in which the avatar can no longer interfere or protect regimes. In short, when zaheer said disorder is the way. He was talking about the natural evolution of civilisation from barbarism to modern. Where the avatar won’t protect anyone like letting the show play out.
