I have always been 50/50 on Azula when it came to her character and what she could have been, on the one hand she seems to enjoy the evil and torment she brings down onto others, on the other hand that may have come to be from living with her father as his favourite child, being conditioned into what he thought was pure strength, as shown by his own actions towards Zuko, she even seemed to hate herself when the “ghost” of her mother talked to her and she basically freaked out in denial. Could she have been more? yes I believe she could have, but not while under her fathers control.

Dang... She her own worse enemy. If she just realize that people try to be her friend instead of thinking they hate her. She could've been one of the best characters and would've become a valuable ally.

Nah man, the way that Ursula treated Azula is not love. "What is wrong with that child" and actively favoring Zuko when it was clear her daughter needed just as much protection, if not more because Ozai saw her as the only fit heir, as her brother did. Ursula was a terrible mother to her, neglectful and cruel. The comics try to erase that past, but the show gave us many insights into the favor she placed in her son, and not her daughter (whom she clearly thought did not deserve or need protection from her insane husband). Azula went crazy before of it, and that's what's so tragic about her. Born lucky? Looks like she had the most abusive, painful mistrusting life of them all. Zuko had his mother and his uncle, Azula had the anger and greed of a tyrant.

Azula was upset that her mother tried to teach Azula compassion, where her father encouraged her callus behavior. If my child was cruel to others, I would question what is wrong with her. Of course Azula would see her mother as not loving because her mother didn't encourage her bad behavior. It's sad.

Azula is still one of my favorite characters (Ty Lee, Aang, Appa, & Iroh being the best of course) love her clever, snarky lines. She should absolutely get a shot at redemption when the time is right. I really enjoyed this break down of her character and her dependence on fear vs. love..super accurate! I don’t know about redemption. But seeing the man Zuko became in the Legend of Korra, we know that after all of Ozai’s schemes, and Azula’s ploys. In the end, they failed. That much is certain.

Azula was a confused child. Ruling through fear was wrong of her, and she missed the point of her mother's love for her and Zuko. Ozai wasn't as sympathetic in that regard, and that is why she ended up becoming the shadow of Zuko's worst fears as firelord.
